"Being Charitable is the Essence of Happiness"
This year the beneficiary of Bids for Kids is especially deserving. Over 2000 children are served daily in the South Sacramento area in the Sacramento Chinese Community Center's After School Program in 16 programs, 14 languages, 5 days per week for 3 hours per day after school. But the most amazing thing is that the children want to be there.
If not for their after school program, 90 percent of the children served would either be on the street and at risk of getting into trouble, or latch key kids waiting for their parent or parents to return home from work. Instead, these children work 3 hours per day in addition to normal school hours and normal school work, studying and learning through a rigorous academic program, advancing their future and happy to have the opportunity. Even though they are spending more time in school than many of their contemporaries, these children are getting what they need to succeed and they welcome the challenge. But these children are still missing something. In order to complete their academic experience, these children lack a way to experience many of the sites in Sacramento and the surrounding region that other children have routinely visited over the years. Places such as Fairy Tale Town, the Sacramento Zoo, the Crocker Art Museum, the Railroad Museum, Sutter's Fort, the Lawrence Hall of Science, the Headlands and the new Sacramento Aerospace Museum to name but a few. Many of the children served by this program have never had the opportunity to visit these sites because of a lack of transportation.
What the program needs is a way to do that. What the program has requested is a bus. A simple vehicle to transport children, who already spend almost 10 hours per day in school, to outside activities which will enhance their learning experience, expose them and encourage them to do better, and show them that the world is not just home to school and school to home. The Sacramento Chinese Community Service Center serves children of all ethnicities, race, color, religion, national origin and ancestry. It has been in existence for over 30 years and is actively sought after by public school administrators. With so many children to serve, a bus would be the missing link providing transportation to children for years to come to functions and activities that many have only dreamed of.
